HSNA Listserv Etiquette & Rules

Updated: Jul 12, 2022

The HSNA Board has drafted a set of rules and etiquette for the neighborhood listserv, to ensure that our communication as neighbors is constructive and supportive. By participating in our e-mail listserv and communication group, you agree to follow the etiquette guidelines set forth on this listserv by the HSNA board. HSNA welcomes all residents of the neighborhood to use this communication method. However, all residents must adhere to the etiquette guidelines. Failure to adhere to these rules by a member may result in a Board vote to restrict or deny listserve privileges. These guidelines may be modified from time to time and such modifications shall be effective upon their posting to the HSNA website. The listserv was established and is managed by the HSNA Board. The listserv is intended to be a convenient and efficient way for members of the neighborhood to communicate about homeowner, neighborhood, and local issues/initiatives/ideas. It enables us to instantly transmit or receive information and opinions on matters of common interest. When a message or a reply is sent to a mail list, the list server immediately distributes it to all subscribers.

Listserv etiquette:

  • Be courteous, polite and keep it impersonal.

  • Don't challenge or speculate about other individuals or houses.

  • Humor is wonderful, but be mindful that it can be misunderstood.

  • Know your audience. It is important to recognize that your audience may have varying degrees of opinions.

  • Identify yourself. Please sign your message with your full name. Among other things, this gives your neighbors the opportunity to consult directly with you on questions or issues that may have come up in discussion.

  • Provide a useful subject line. Posting a subject line that reflects your message's contents affords your neighbors the ability to prioritize their reading. This is a significant consideration, particularly when the list of subscribers is large and there is a high volume of transmissions. Please also modify the subject line as the subject evolves.

  • Please limit "Reply All" responses to only when necessary. Most responses should only go to the sender of the original email, and responses such as "agree" and other gestures should just be a “reply to sender” unless you are adding additional commentary (don't forget your name and street name).

  • Be germane. Tailor your response/message to the issue being addressed. If another person posts a reply that is off the subject, do NOT "reply all" to the listserv and keep the off-subject conversation out of the thread.

  • Ask questions. Offer answers. Share your knowledge. Give Insight.

  • Remember that all listserv exchanges are public domain.

  • If you have an issue for the HSNA board, please use the howellstationneighborhoodassoc@gmail.com email address.

Rules:

  1. No political endorsements, political campaign postings, or party politics. (Healthy debate about local bureaucratic issues/decisions, or awareness campaigns run by non-profits are ok)

  2. Naming or referencing specific people or houses can only be done for thanks or praise, no personal attacks or comments.

  3. Identify yourself. Please sign your message with your full name.

  4. No impersonation of any person or entity;

  5. No emails involving any, "junk mail," "spam," "chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any other form of solicitation.

  6. No emails with content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically, or otherwise objectionable;

  7. No E-mail Harvesting
